North Region

This section contains a list of lodging available on the Northern tip of Zanzibar.

Just follow the links above.

The best beach on Zanzibar for swimming at all tides is marked on this map! Beautiful white sand, with great beach bars and restaurants.

BUT, more and more resorts are being built in the area and the small beach alcoves in Nungwi are getting crowded during high tide. Beach peddlers have become a real nuisance.

Nungwi Map

Nungwi has had its share of problems. Occasional muggings, assaults and even rapes should put tourists on notice to be careful especially after dark. And never accept drinks from strangers at local bars; date-rape drugs have been reported we hear.

The beach to the north of Baraka Bungalows is small and the reef makes swimming impossible at low tide. Further north the beach gets uglier.

Most of the southern beach at Nungwi disappears at high tide except for a few alcoves - the largest stretch of high-tide beach is between Baobab Bungalows and the Z Hotel and there is a smaller alcove just north of Baraka. The reef starts near Amaan so if you enjoy swimming in the ocean we recommend you stay south of Baraka Bungalows.

You can walk from Nungwi to Kendwa along the beach at low tide only because the stretch from Baobab to Gemma del Est has a very narrow beach with coral walls.

The Z Hotel is currently a great value-for-money option in Nungwi/Kendwa especially for the younger generation who do not mind the small rooms (many with obstructed sea views) and somewhat busy/crowded setting. While not luxurious, it has a great location and its two sea-front cottages are two of the best rooms on mainland Zanzibar. And its menus are in English - not Italian!

In our opinion, Gemma del Est has the best location as it is located between Nungwi and Kendwa - just 10-20 minute beach walks to either!

We prefer Gemma because it has a better beach, the rooms have generally better views and they are larger/more comfortable - but be aware it is very popular with Italians and the resort caters mostly for their needs in terms of food, etc.

Kendwa Map

Kendwa has a wide, clean, white beach. It is not as populated as Nungwi and you can easily find a secluded spot on the beach anywhere from Gemma del Est to Kilindi and further south.

It is our favorite beach on mainland Zanzibar. The water is clean and there is no reef so you can swim in the ocean at any time of time. You can beach bar-hop, you can shop at one of several beach kiosks and there are several fishing and diving shops. And then there are the wonderful sunsets!

Unfortunately, we hear the large Italian hotel groups are buying out the small local lodges and we expect Kendwa to change drastically in the coming years. We have nothing against Italians but do they not have enough resorts already on Zanzibar?

Assuming you have a decent budget and are looking for a certain level of comfort, in terms of overall location and amenities, Gemma del Est is the perfect Kendwa choice although it is technically in Nungwi! It has a pool, pool bar, pier with bars and restaurants and a good selection of watersports. The deluxe rooms have great views with air-conditioning and mosquito nets.

The best small resort is Kendwa Breezes. Most of its rooms have clear views of the beach (almost unheard of in Kendwa where most rooms are hidden behind the beach bars and/or trees).

Kilindi is the obvious luxury option in Kendwa if one believes the brochures but it is new and needs a bit of time before we would recommend it.

Be aware that many rooms on Kendwa are sold as "on the beach" or with "sea views"! There are rooms on the beach (at Kendwa Rocks for example) but these do not have clear sea views because they are behind the beach bars and restaurants. Sea view rooms often offer only a glimpse of the water from behind the trees and bar structures. Buyer beware!

You can walk from Gemma to the Kendwa hotels at high tide or low tide - the beach does not disappear at high tide!
