Location! Location! HOME

Ndarakwai Ranch comprises 3 farms at West Kilimanjaro totaling over 11,000 acres (about 4500 hectares). 14 years ago this land was being over-grazed, heavily poached, and trees were being cut down for charcoal – it was a wasteland.

Since that time Peter Jones – the owner - has been able to rehabilitate the area by improving the vegetation and developing water resources to a point where wildlife has returned. Ndarakwai is now an exciting and exclusive destination for visitors who want avoid the crowds and have a close-up experience in Tanzania.

This extraordinary area comprises a variety of different habitats from dry plains, volcanic hills, acacia woodland, and rich riparian zones, resulting in a wide range of animal and bird species. This is classic African savannah country, with sweeping views across to Mt Meru and north towards Amboseli National park in Kenya.

Ndarakwai is an excellent destination for the traveler wanting to get close to nature – unrestricted by roads and vehicles. This is also an excellent area for cultural experiences – the Maasai dominate. The unique Camp design and close relationship with the local communities mean that this is a must for those interested in conservation issues.

Ndarakwai provides the only source of water for wildlife for a very large area and helps to maintain ancient migration corridors. A dedicated staff of 16 rangers patrol the area regularly to make regular animals counts.

A vital part of the Ndarakwai project and its existence is community involvement. People from the surrounding community are employed on the ranch, and were an essential vital part of the camp construction. Today the Camp is largely staffed by people from the area and most of the fresh supplies come from neighboring farms.

Ndarakwai supports education in the form of contributing annually to the construction of Secondary schools in the area, scholarships for outstanding students, and by supplying meals at the neighboring primary school. The meals project has been so successful that attendance is now at capacity.

Ndarakwai Camp Management is dedicated to protecting the environment and creating a sustainable relationship and balance between wildlife, communities and the environment.

Catering to a maximum of 24 guests, Ndarakwai Camp offers an intimate atmosphere where your every need is catered to. Mealtimes are flexible and can be arranged with your guide and the camp Manager. Picnic lunches, bush breakfasts, and a bush campfire & bar are easily arranged. In the evening guests can gather around either of 2 indoor fireplaces, or an outdoor campfire for snacks and sundowners. Welcome the African night, replete with elephants that ghost through the camp and the haunting cries of bush babies in the trees.

Guests can relax in camp during the day, or take in the variety of wildlife and cultural activities that are on offer. Ndarakwai Ranch is over 10,000 acres in size and the options are many: Guided full or half day walks (where the emphasis can either be on game or bird watching), game drives, and night game drives. You can also visit local Maasai villages and buy authentic beaded jewelry, and with prior arrangement (and a minimum number of participants) you can go for half or full day horse rides. Day trips to Arusha National Park, and into Kilimanjaro National Park are also easily arranged. During your visit, whatever activities you choose, you will likely visit the ‘tree house’ where you can watch game at the waterhole.
